English and Citizenship

Heartfelt Tidbits offers a formal classroom setting for English language learning. In conjunction with three-hour ESL courses, we provide citizenship classes to those who have a higher English ability.

Method

Classes are divided into small groups of 5-7 students. They are taught by our trained teachers and teaching assistants who help implement our innovative curriculum. Our citizenship classes are taught by trained volunteers, and most often by refugees who have taken the citizenship exam.

Healthcare

Healthcare providers regularly visit class. Students can have their glucose and blood pressure checked—and get answers to health-related questions. In addition, OSU Extension provides classes on the importance of nutrition and physical activity.

Integration

Throughout the year, students have the chance to participate in community activities and field trips introducing them to different facets of American culture.

Referrals

In addition to the English lessons, this course offers an opportunity for refugees to receive assistance and inquire about employment, housing, education, or any other concerns.

Recognizing that one or two times a week isn’t sufficient to learn a new language, Heartfelt Tidbits provides an informal and relaxed way for refugees to converse with our volunteers and practice their English during sewing, art, fiber arts, and other gatherings.
